Brief History: Zuko has had a rather difficult life. As a child he was some what of a mama's boy and never really got along with his little sister, Azula. He was always brave and a hard worker but often lived in his sister's shadow. Azula was a child prodigy at the martial arts and the gift of "fire bending." Their father, Ozai, made it clear from the very start which of the children he preferred.
Soon after this, Zuko’s uncle Iroh (Ozai’s brother) withdrew from the battle of Ba Sing Se because his son had died. Ozai, viewing his older brother as weak and a failure, asked his father to take his place as the heir to the fire-lord thrown. The fire lord of the time, Azulan was shocked at Ozai’s betrayal of his older brother at such a low time in his life and ordered that in order for Ozai to empathize with his brother, he must kill his only son. Ursa (Zuko’s mother) intervened. It is not clear what happened that night. Fire lord Azulan died and it is highly likely that he was murdered, either by Ozai or Ursa. Ozai took the throne and continued the war against the other nations while Ursa was banished.

One day at a strategic meeting, with all of the generals in place, the young Zuko spoke out of turn (defending the young soldiers one of the strategists were willing to sacrifice) and embarrassed his father. Fire Lord Ozai challenged his son to an Agni Kai (fire bending duel) and scarred the young man for life. Then, he banished his son, ordering him never to return to the Fire Nation until he had the head of the Avatar (the defender of the free world and Master of all the elements).

Zuko left the Fire Nation with his Uncle Iroh and sought the Avatar for over three years before he returned. Knowing the Avatar was not dead and realizing that he did not belong with the Fire Nation any longer, he faced his father, told him he was joining the Avatar and fled.
